Shameful!! L Sarita Devi cheated by judges to be denied victory
« on: September 30, 2014, 04:06:59 pm »
An outraged Indian boxing contingent lodged a protest and demanded a review of L Sarita Devi's semifinal bout in the Asian Games after the veteran was adjudged to have lost despite a dominating performance against home favourite Jina Park.

The Indian boxing contingent lodged a protest after paying a $500 fee, which would not be refunded if the review upholds the original decision. "A protest has been lodged against the decision," a member of the contingent said.

The 32-year-old Indian was left in tears after losing a bout in which she matched Park blow for blow in the opening round and was markedly more aggressive and precise thereafter.

Sarita (60kg), a former Asian champion, fell behind after a rather bizarre turn of events in which Park ended up being the judges' choice despite barely managing to stay in the fight.

Such was the Indian's ferocity that Park resorted to holding to slow down the pace of the bout after being left with a bloodied nose.

But Sarita's precision and her brilliant ring craft failed to find favour with the judges in the third and fourth rounds which went to the home favourite, who was struggling to stand up to the onslaught of punches from the Manipuri.

Meanwhile, Sarita found support from India's long-time Cuban coach B I Fernandes and fellow boxer MC Mary Kom, who advanced to the final.

"It was pre-decided, the 3-0 verdict is a clear cut indication. The Korean deserved to have been given many standing counts, going by what happened in the ring, and the bout should have been stopped," Fernandes said.

"Sarita was a clear-cut winner but money has talked here and the judges deserve to be thrown out. It happened in Seoul during the 1988 Olympic Games, it's happening now again. Nothing seems to have changed. The new rules have made no difference," he fumed.

Mary also expressed her disappointment. "I am shocked and disappointed. Sarita was the clear winner. This should not have happened," she said.

In another shocker after Sarita's controversial loss, a Mongolian boxer loses to a South Korean despite appearing to be the better boxer of the two. NDTV's Suprita Das reports that a few water bottles were thrown at the ring in the Korean boxer's direction after their bout.

Both Malaysian and Indian complaints have been turned down. L-)

Inconsolable Sarita refuses bronze, medal with organisers

Distraught after losing her controversial semifinal bout, Indian boxer L Sarita Devi on Wednesday stunned officials and spectators by refusing to accept the bronze medal, which is now in the custody of organizers.

Crying bitterly on the podium, Sarita first refused to wear the medal before handing it over to Park after sharing an emotional hug with the home boxer.

The former Asian and world champion then left the ceremony. Park, visibly rattled by the turn of events, left the medal on the podium and made her exit.

A sobbing Sarita later told reporters that she had to do what she did at the medal ceremony to continue with her boxing career or else it would have stayed in her mind.

"It's not that I did not want to accept the medal. I accepted it and then gave it back to the Koreans. I had to do this to continue with my boxing career or the memory of this incident would have stayed on in my mind. I would now go back and hug my infant child," she said.

She was ready to accept the consequences of her actions but also accused the Indian officialdom of being uncaring in the whole episode.

"I am prepared for any consequences. Not one Indian official came to us and consoled or even spoke to us," she said.

Boxer Sarita Devi faces AIBA probe for returning medal.

India's woman Boxer Sarita Devi is facing an AIBA probe for returning her bronze medal during the podium ceremony with the world governing body's supervisor describing her act as "regretful".

Sarita was robbed off a shot at the gold medal after losing the 60kg semifinal bout against Korea's Jina Park. Out of frustration and exasperation, a crying Sarita returned the medal today.

"AIBA has already proceeded its Disciplinary Action Process to review this case, and the decision will be made immediately after the Asian Games," AIBA said in a statement.

AIBA in its statement said that its supervisor and Technical Delegate David B Francis has submitted a report to the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) concerning the case.

"The whole incident looked like a well planned scenario by her and her team, and it is regretful to watch a boxer refuse the medal regardless of what happened in the competition," Francis wrote.

"In this regard, as the Technical Delegate, I had to request OCA to review this incident, so any boxer or athlete in other sports will not follow in her footsteps by respecting the spirit of fair-play and sportsmanship of the Olympic Movement," added Francis.

The AIBA Supervisor argued that the whole Indian Boxing Team was protesting the AIBA Referees and Judges' system and management, which was "obviously caused by a lack of understanding of the AIBA Technical and AOB Competition Rules."

The report further added that while protesting, the Indian did not follow the AIBA Technical Rules and protested against the judges' decisions, though the Rules only allow a protest against the Referee's Decision.

Which "spirit of fair play" and "sportsmanship" this Francis is talking about? L-) Why there is no provision to complain against judges? Shame on AIBA and their stupid rule making body. >:P

She prepared for such events for years, and that too by staying away from her child, and she had to suffer from such decisions. That was total injustice with her. Even the local crowd booed the judges there. By her gesture, she just told the Koreans what they deserved.

Yes, also while she was at the pedestal she was not some individual but someone who was representing India. This is like ashaming India.

All her protest and all is justified but this is not.

I actually agree with Rakson .

I won't say overreacting because she must be anguished by the decision taken by the Jury . I mean, she must have been preparing for this tournament for years, and now loosing because of refree's shortcoming , must have resulted in sudden outburst , which we saw in the ceremonial .
