Sports / SAINA NEHWAL becomes WORLD No. 1!!
« on: March 28, 2015, 09:27:32 pm »
Saina Nehwal on Saturday scripted history by becoming the first Indian woman shuttler to attain the number one spot in world rankings, reaffirming her status as the country's most consistent performer in the international circuit.

Saina also reached her maiden India Open final on Saturday by beating Yui Hashimoto 21-15, 21-11 in the second semifinals.

The 25-year-old zoomed to the top after her closest challenger for the position, Spain's Carolina Marin, lost in the India Open Super Series semifinal here.

Though the official rankings will be out only on Thursday next week, Saina has been assured of her ascent to the top owing to the reigning world champion's 19-21, 23-21, 20-22 loss to third seed Thai Ratchanok Intanon.

Saina thus becomes only the second Indian overall to be world number one after Prakash Padukone had the distinction of being the numero uno men's badminton player.

The London Olympic bronze-medalist has won a staggering 14 international titles in her glorious career and most recently she became the first Indian woman to make the finals of the prestigious All England Championships in Manchester

"Number one is not at the back of mind right now. The only thing I am focussing on is playing all the tournaments and I want to win them," Saina had said when asked about the ranking.

"I want to perform well and beat the players against whom I was losing. I don't want to lose the way I was losing in the last three years. I want to be more consistent. When you are playing well, other things fall in place", she said.

The injury-ravaged Saina, who admitted that it is "tough to maintain rankings", said she remains intent on achieving consistency.

"It is tough to be in top-five for the last seven years. I hope to maintain it for some more time. I feel good. At the same time I have to work hard every day, train every day. It is too tiring. I want to be the best. It is my personal choice, fight against the top players. I want to be one of the top players in the world," she asserted.

"Everyone dreams of winning World Championship, Olympics and I am one of them. It is not that right now, I want everything. I want to be a little cool and relaxed and enjoy my game. It's my job and I want to enjoy it," she added.

President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated Saina one her achievement.

The Hyderabad-based player has several firsts to her credit in Indian badminton. She was the first to be a junior world champion, besides being the first to clinch a Super Series title.

Initially groomed by former All England champion Pullela Gopichand, Saina is currently under the tutelage of former national champion Vimal Kumar.

The path-breaker was awarded the country's highest sporting honour -- the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award -- in 2010.

Pakistani players shamelessly hurled obscene gestures towards Indian fans and media after their win over India but no action will be taken against them as their coach Shahnaz Sheikh has apologised to the FIH for the incident.

Soon after their 4-3 win, Pakistani players went into a frenzy mode and started celebrating their victory in a wild fashion. They started dancing in jubilation.

They removed their shirts, used foul language and made obscene gestures towards the crowd and media, prompting their coach Shahnaz to come into action and take away his players.

Tournament director Wiert Doyer then spoke to Pakistani camp and said International Hockey Federation (FIH) has accepted their apology.

"The celebration of the Pakistani team contained some behaviour that warranted further investigation by me as tournament director. As a result I have spoken to the head coach of the Pakistan team, Mr Shahnaz Sheikh and told him that the behaviour of Pakistan players went beyond what is acceptable to standards of the FIH," Doyer said.

"The behaviour in question concerned many members of the Pakistan team. It is difficult to find any particular miscreant, and it is possible that the behaviour of the players may have been a reaction. Shahnaz Sheikh has apologized and assured me that this behaviour will not occur again. Given these matters, I've decided that no further action is warranted," Doyer added.

The gestures of the Pakistani players infuriated every person present at the stadium.

Pakistan coach Shahnaz Sheikh was bound to feel the wrath of the media at the post-match press conference for his players' behavior but he went away by merely saying a sorry, which according to him was enough to settle the issue.

"I am not a politician I am a sportsperson, but I am sorry for this. They are youngsters and made a mistake in enthusiasm. I guess that's enough," Sheikh simply said and walked out of the conference hall evading further questions on the matter.

India captain Sardar Singh also denounced winners' celebration style.

"It doesn't look good because many families came to watch the match. Their celebration after the win was not appropriate. They deserved to win. Congratulations to them, but the way they celebrated by opening their shirt and making indecent gestures was not right. It sends a wrong message."

India's high performance director Roealt Oltmans said, "To be honest I didn't see much but it looked too much."

Andy Murray knocked out of World Tour Finals by Roger Federer

Roger Federer thrashed Andy Murray 6-0 6-1 to end the Briton's ATP World Tour Finals hopes in humiliating fashion.

The 17-time Grand Slam champion needed just 56 minutes to win his third Group B match and reach the semi-finals. Murray required a straight-sets win to qualify but won only eight points in the first set and did not win a game until 6-0 5-0 down.

The result is Murray's worst since he lost 6-1 6-0 to Novak Djokovic in Miami seven years ago.

Japanese world number five Kei Nishikori qualifies behind Federer after his earlier 4-6 6-4 6-1 victory over Spaniard David Ferrer - a replacement for the injured Milos Raonic.

"Clearly, I'm very happy to play a good match today," Federer said. "I knew I was qualified so maybe I went in a bit more relaxed. It's not the way I thought it was going to go, but there's always next year for Andy and hopefully he can have a good season. At the end I was happy I didn't win the second to last game to be quite honest."

After 24 minutes, Murray's progress in the tournament was over as he suffered his first 6-0 set loss in four years.

"It was a tough night," Murray said. "I've lost Grand Slam finals, which have been very tough, but in terms of the way the match went it was not ideal from my side of the court - far from it. He played exceptionally well, that's for sure. I can say I'm disappointed with my level tonight but if I played well, he probably still would have won anyway."

A tight, tense encounter had been anticipated with the Scot needing a fast start, and Federer keen to win the group and so probably avoid top seed Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals.

The 17,000 spectators packed into the O2 must have thought they were in a for classic when Murray won the opening two points on Federer's serve, before the Swiss won an epic 34-stroke rally on the third.

From that moment on it was one-way traffic as Murray struggled to find first serves and Federer produced some sublime tennis.

As the games rolled by, he even threatened to inflict the dreaded 'double bagel' on Murray, whose ambition became drastically reduced.

Federer moves on to the semi-finals and keeps his outside hopes of ending the year as world number one alive, although Djokovic can end that race should he beat Tomas Berdych on Friday.
