NOT every company will be conducting a GD's but yeah some do by making it a three round session with written test ----> GD ----> interview(technical + HR)

about preparing for written test
concentrate on aptitude and verbal ability
buy a decent book like  R S  AGRAWAAL(VERBAL AND NON VERBAL REASONING)

for verbal ability (vocab) it would be good if u go through the BARRON'S GRE master word list

solve puzzles of shakuntla devi

since sometimes for companies like TCS questions will be coming directly from them

most important to prepare for placement is the time management
do allot yourself at least 1 hour a day for this if u have a lot of time i.e if u r starting this from 3rd year

otherwise 3-4 hours are needed

still i would like to request the alumni member to please elaborate

your experiences
that would  help even better

Well you made my job easy by answering most of the thing. Our time I guess only accenture had GD round. TCS,INFY,HCL,IFLEX and others all had written and interviews. The best way to prepare is to work on communication skills and make sure you are good with oops, dbms etc so that you can take care of the technical interview. As far as preparations for written is concerned toh you can always go thru online papers but that can be done about a month before the placement. Till then work on your soft skills and technical skills.

Must have's for clearing aptitude and english tests

RS aggarwal- quantative aptitude----- important

RS aggarwal- verbal and non verbal---- optional

Shakuntla devi---- Not required..
the puzzles are quite old and were asked around 3-4 years back.. not now..

Online papers from freshersworld.com and chetnasinterviews.com are really helpful.. make sure u check out the latest ones and not the old ones.-----important

DBMS, C and oops using C++ -- brush through all the important concepts for technical part of the placements--- mostly we are asked in which subject u r comfortable.. but be prepared for questions from atleast these 3

rest other papers that u give can be beneficial for core companies.. say electrical machines for electrical core companies.. etc.. :D

Barrons is also gud, but its mainly for GRE and TCS exam... however its gud if you working with that.

I would suggest WORD POWER made easy by norman lewis for those who are in 1st nd 2nd year.. u have ample time to brush ur skills and this is an excellent book to start with.

Brother, this page might help you out..

http://techbits.co.in/forum/index.php?tid=1512

Coming to your queries -
1. Extra Co-curricular activities helps building up a nice resume..
As per new CV format, there's a separate section called "EXTRAS".
Where you can fill up "Strong command over English" "Mathematical Perfection to tackle Engineering Problems" , etc etc..
In short, Extra activities does count a bit.
2. For English, tution is never a necessity..!! But yes, there's a style to answer questions.. I mean a method to behave.. Which will gradually develop in your 4 years of B.tech.. Prefer talking in English whenever possible, and try to make stage appearances...
3. English is a global language, prefer replying in English... But if interviewer is getting frank and is questioning in Hindi, then reply in Hindi... Try to avoid usage of "Hinglish"...!!
4. For your last query i have given a link where Techmaniac sir has provided some awesome stuff to go through..

Anyways, that's all from my side.. Akhil sir, and Prabhat sir will surely be ready with some more gentle answers...
