Total no. of credits=214
Min. required to get a degree= 200.
After passing 8 th sem. , u will get a consolidated cumulative marksheet containing marks of all subjects & including your final aggregate CPI and provisional degree certificate (before the awarding of actual degree, as it takes time) by the University.
CPI will be calculated taking into account top 200 credits out of 214. Even if u secure full credits, university will only take into account top 200 credits for calculating CPI. This means that 3 of all theory subjects in which ur marks are lowest in comparison to marks secured by u in other subjects are excluded while calculating CPI. Obviously, a degree with full credits secured is preferred by companies during placement. The aggregate percentage which is used by companies is calculated by using this simple formula-
(sum of all your secured marks in all 8 sems.) / (total of max. marks of all the subjects) * 100.
For example- if sum of all ur secured marks in all 8 sems. is 6700 and sum of max. marks is 8200. Then ur percentage is 6700/8200*100= 81.7
But according to the CPI system, u will get a different final percentage.
As most of students secure more marks in practicals (which have only 1 or 2 credits) than theory exams (which have 3 or 4 credits), the final CPI is generally approx. 2-3 % less than the aggregate % calculated by the simple formula. Like in above example, u will obtain around 78-79 % CPI.....If ur score in theory & practical exams r equally good, then ur CPI will not vary much from ur simpler aggregate %. In fact ur CPI can be greater than the simple aggregate %, if u score more in theory than practicals.
In short, more the no. of credits, more important will be the subject. Therefore, the major project (8 credits) is the most imp. subject....
Also, be careful about backlogs, especially in final yr.....they r more dangerous than backs in first 3 yrs, because most companies require all subjects to be cleared at time of joining....if u get a back in 7th or 8th sem.....u wouldn't get a chance to clear it before joining....however a back in 4th sem can be cleared during the 6th sem exams & likewise holds for the first 6 sems......
Also, after ur 8th sem. exams, if u arehaving 1-2 pending backlogs & have secured min. 200 credits in total, the University will not give u a chance to clear those exams & secure full credits, since u already have the min. no. of credits required for the award of degree. but, if u are able to clear all ur pending backlogs before or in the final year, you will get full credits. So, never ever get a backlog in final yr....
