well i booted window seven from pendrive this is good example very good but you can make bootable pendrive of vista and seven only by this i will soon update it with xp also

*Type cmd in Start menu search box and hit Ctrl+ Shift+ Enter.
Or
*Go to Start menu > All programs > Accessories, right click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
3. You need to know about the USB drive a little bit. Type in the following commands in the command prompt:
First type DISKPART and hit enter

Next type LIST DISK command and note down the Disk number (ex: Disk 1) of your USB flash drive. my Flash Drive Disk no is Disk 1.

4. Next type all the below commands one by one. Here I assume that your disk drive no is Disk 1.If you have Disk 2 as your USB flash drive then use Disk

2.Refer the above step to confirm it.
So below are the commands you need to type and execute one by one:
SELECT DISK 1
CLEAN
CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY
SELECT PARTITION 1
ACTIVE
FORMAT FS=NTFS
(Format process may take few seconds)
ASSIGN
EXIT
Dont close the command prompt as we need to execute one more command at the next step. Just minimize it.

5. Next insert your Windows7/Vista DVD into the optical drive and check the drive letter of the DVD drive. In this guide I will assume that your DVD drive letter is D and USB drive letter is H (open my computer to know about it).

6. Maximize the minimized Command Prompt in the 4th step.Type  the following command now:
D:CD BOOT and hit enter.Where D is your DVD drive letter.
CD BOOT and hit entere.
7. Type another command given below to update the USB drive with BOOTMGR compatible code.
BOOTSECT.EXE/NT60 H:

Where H is your USB drive letter. Once you enter the above command you will see the below message.
8. Copy your Windows 7/Vista DVD contents to the USB flash drive.

9. Your USB drive is ready to boot and install Windows 7/Vista. Only thing you need to change the boot priority at the BIOS to USB from the HDD or CD ROM drive. I wont explain it as its just the matter the changing the boot priority or enabling the USB boot option in the BIOS.
Note: If you are not able to boot after following this guide means you havent set the BIOS priority to USB.

and this works coz seven in which i am typing this i have installed by pendrive only
for xp barts is a solution but complicated i will update soon for xp also

@ashish
the method provide by u is gr8 but i want to ask a question:
Is it necessary to format a PD to NTFS format using DISKPART utility.
Can this done without formatting a PD.
I ask this question coz' i had recently purchased a SONY PD (its costly) and i dont want to change its format to NTFS.(Got irritated with kingston   )

And yes i know a method to install XP from usb device...
Its very simple.....
Its not BartPE XP method ,its even simpler than that one...!!!!!!! :ctbl

Man requirements:
1. Motherboard supporting USB  booting,
2. a pendrive(1GB, 2GB , 4GB) (Not tested with 8 GB or above coz format problem, it has to be FAT or FAT32)
3. HP formatting Tool (can be easily found on google)
4. MS-DOS files (attached below)(its in exe format, just double click it and extract it on desired location and from HP formatting tool use these files to make it bootable)

Now main part........

First find HP USB disk formatting tool and install it.

Then plug ur USB device and format it with FAT file system with HP tool(Run as Admin)
In format options tick-->Quick format
-->Create a DOS start-up disk (it will ask for DOS files , give it the path of Win98boot files(attached) )
Then click -->START..
Ur PD would be formatted with FAT file system and would boot when PC starts..

Now just throw all the contents of Windows XP CD to the device.

Add a file SMARTDRV.EXE to speed up installation.(attached)
And ur done....

Just restart ur PC and change settings in BIOS to boot from usb device..

and again restart...

MS-DOS will start.. there type the following 3 commands

SMARTDRV.EXE

CD i386

WINNT

thats all the setup will load files of windows XP and u will get same screen as u c while installing with CD.

And its done...........

Plz reply if u found this method helpful.........

We can use universal usb installer to install various linux distros.. Its pretty simple to use, download the exe file..run then u have to just add the .iso file from the location and select the distro which u want to install from the list ane hit install option.

simplest way -->

just install   http://download.cnet.com/Windows-7-USB-DVD-Download-Tool/3000-18513_4-10972600.html

i hv done it so many times....

simple copyin wont work because to boot from a perpheral device it needs a boot.ini file which will be created by above software....
