This is a very general question which
probably most of the parents and
students keep on asking before taking
admission to a field of engineering
study. Of-course this question is very
important to be answered before taking
the admission to a particular branch.

Convert your interest to
your answer. If you have interest in
computer and programming then go for
Computer Science Engineering, if
interested in electronic circuits then go
for Electrical and Electronics
Engineering, if you find your interests
in mechanical machines then go for
Mechanical Engineering. The explanation
is the ideal case, but I agree, the case is
not so straight forward as the simple
way I explained it. So let’s analyze it
and become little more practical
according to the today’s scenario.
While taking admission into an
engineering branch, few points keep
biasing the decision:
(i) Interest 💡 in a particular branch of
study (This should be the case and most
welcomed biasing factor, but
unfortunately this does not take place
in many of the cases as many don’t
know what is their interest)
(ii) Job opportunity 😯 in the respective
field of study (Valid factor,
which influences majority of the cases.
And it should be; as at the end of the
day job matters)
(iii) Scope of higher study in the
respective field of study (Very valid
point and related to the first one, i.e, if
you have interest in the branch then
only you can think about the higher
study. But unfortunately more than
99% of people in India don’t think about
this while deciding for bachelor degree
admission to a particular engineering
branch. This is the reason why India is
lagging behind in engineering research)
(iv) Neighbor’s son has admitted to
branch ‘X’ and got a good job, so my
son will also join the same branch (The
most funny 😆 and idiotic factor to be
biased with. But this happens with
majority of the cases in India)

The biasing with the first factor
mentioned always gives a good result.
But may not be everyone land up with an
interest field by the age of taking
admission. In that case go for the
second factor but with an analysis of
broad vision. For example; towards the
end of 90s and beginning of 2K majority
of the students were eager to take
admission into Information Technology
Engineering. Suddenly around 2003 –
2004 students switched to Electronics
and Telecommunication Engineering and
it was a kind of message at that time
that there is no jobs in IT and ample
amount of jobs are available in ECE.
Again after the 2008 recession it seems
like there are not plenty jobs in ECE.
Now people are switching towards
Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.
It is nothing like that suddenly a
particular branch has introduced plenty
of job opportunities and all of a sudden
the same field has no jobs in the
market. It happens only because of “the
imbalance in the number of applicants in
the market and the number of jobs
available in the market at a particular
time”. The equation is very simple and
like this; for example: Plenty of
students were enrolled in ECE during
the years 2003 to 2006, and the batches
got passed during 2007 to 2010. So the
job opportunities could be seen around in
2003 for ECE, were virtual for the
enrolling students at that time, as the
actual opportunities were for the less
number of students got admitted to
ECE during the year 1999 or 2000 who
were getting passed out at 2003 or 2004.
So the market was able to consume
almost all of the ECE engineers passed
out during that period. But the same
situation was not their in the year 2008
and onwards as plenty of ECE engineers
were available in the market but jobs
were limited. So it was felt like suddenly
the ECE branch has lost its charm and
there are no jobs in that branch. Hence
a broad vision of future job scope
analysis is required if someone is getting
admitted to any engineering branch
without any special interest for the
same field.
Another factor is, people always run
behind the branches about which they
listen most of the time from others. And
they feel like as most of the students
are going in that field so there must be
lot of jobs in that stream. So they go
for the same as well. But here the
matter of consideration is that the
rate of competition grows rapidly in
that field both for jobs as well for
higher studies. If we consider for higher
studies, a student in Chemical
Engineering gets admission in IIT in
M.Tech with a particular GATE score
where as with the same GATE score a
ECE or CSE student even struggles to
get admission for M.Tech in top NITs
also. So students should also join Rare
branches of Engineering Studies to
avoid these kind of high rate of
competition risk in future.

Well, after spending 3 years in electrical engineering....i have gained some good experiences which are worth to be shared here-

If somebody asks me which branch to choose for engineering in India, I advice him or her to choose one from following options-
1st tier branches- Electrical, Computer science, Ece, mechanical
2nd tier branches- civil, chemical, instrumentation and control.
3rd tier branches- polymer, robotics, biotech, engineering physics, biomedical, aeronautical etc.

If you are planning to do b.tech from India and you don't have any specific interest, then remain stick to 1st tier branches and if not then choose one from 2nd tier branches. Avoid 3rd tier branches untill and unless it is do or die for u.

The above one was a general approach to select a good branch but I know, a fresher, who is planning to join this tech field always wants a pin point approach.( Don't worry, I am going to give explanation on it too).

If you want one best branch from all these, then I will say it is computer science (yes, I am from electrical yet I suggest you to go for computer science if you have even a little affinity for it).
don't think that that I am saying cse is best branch just because it gives highest package or large amount of jobs (this is actually a very shallow reason to opt for cse).
The biggest advantage of cse is : PROGRAMMING!
Mathematics, Chess, Piano, Athletics, Programming- all these fields have one thing in common, these are both science as well as art. You can learn it, practice it, and develop your skills in these fields because all of these are more like arts. These are not conventional sciences where u are supposed to learn certain theories and then go for research. It is like cricket, you can acquire skills in programming and improve it by practicing.

There are numbers of coding competitions open for a programmer like codechef, spoj, hackathon, google code jam, ICPC etc.
You get register yourself there and start solving coding problems (these are more like puzzles). And best thing about these coding competitions is that, you get ur world ranking. You get to know where do u stand in terms of programming skills all over the world.
(I know a junior of mine who is from IIT kgp cse dual degree right now. His codechef world rank is in two digits. Needless to say he is one of the best programmers in world right now. He knows tonnes of maths, algorithms and has learned almost everything in C++).

Apart from this programming thing, cse has its own theory part like usual branches. You learn data structure, operating system, computer networks, DBMS etc. These are like conventional science subjects. Learn them and if you want to do more, go for research.

Now, talking about other branches like electrical, mechanical and civil- these are just like your class 12th physics curriculum. You learn the theory part, perform selected practicals and give exams and wait for results to come. That's it, your engineering life ends here. After four years you get an engineering degree and then you realise that there was no difference between your engineering and your school life (yea there are competitions like Baja go karte, Texas instrument circuit design but these arnt like programming competitions. You just learn the theory part and design circuit on them. It is more like physics test)

Rest, everyone knows cse gives foreign placements and package as big as crores.
PS- Though personally I'm  happy to take electrical over cse.

@Captain America  You won't understand electrical research until you actually do it. You are just too fascinated by programming (I liked it too though). But electrical and electronics is interesting in its own way. I loved doing my minor and major projects.

Sir yahi to problem hai.
Not everyone can go into research as it requires huge patience.
To be honest, I'm interested in COMPETITIVE PROGRAMMING instead of just PROGRAMMING.
This COMPETITIVE PROGRAMMING of ACM ICPC is something like FIFA CUP in football. Engineers are crazy for this continental competition.

And programming is not everyone's cup of tea either. Its upto the person to decide his/her interest.

Being in IPU i learnt this that the biggest enemy of people here is the syllabus
if you read this, what people are doing at IIIT hyderabad . They are actually following a proper , what we call a "CSE" course, and here in the first year we are made to do things which i dont think we will be using it in our entire life
What we learn in 1st year was the same thing my younger brother was learning at that time (low level high level language , input output devices etc.)

And in third year we have a subject called Data Structures
what is so weird being in IPU and studying this subject is that , the main motive of teachers is that you should just learn this , we are never made to implement the algos
only basic implementation which seems as a formality becuse we need to follow the so called "Syllabus " and yes something need to be shown at the time of external practical

you ask any CSE/IT guy to implement any algo he learnt from " the university course"  in any competitive Question
i am sure 80% would fail

and people here dont know about competitive programming or ACM ICPC and how important it is .
we are like the sheeps who are following the herd having no idea about the future.
