the very first rule of programming is:

"just write the code nd compile it to get the as best result as u can get, instead of just thinking."

although i m not a programmer still i would like to add some points in improving

basic programming skills

1.Read  a book for reference: books are always helpful when u need them
                                                so try to use them

2.Try to write ur own code: u will always be able to understand ur own code
at least (if u are not really dumb)

3.Show ur code to others:     they may criticize but use their advice in a positive
way and dont let it bother u

4.Be patient:                           be patient and try to solve the problem calmly

Here I'll post some of my favourite programming challenge websites.

Project Euler (http://projecteuler.net/) as slimshady is my favourite. Lots of questions, tricky, mathematical, intiguing but sometimes, well it can get mundane though.

CodeChef (http://www.codechef.com/) is also very good. It gives you a real time experience of problems where you actually post the code and the server compiles for you. Best of all, it has competitions, workshops, seminars etc all for us Indians. So the Indian budding programmers can actually bud.

Below is a thread (of which i dont take credit at all) that has a compilation of various such programming competitions/challenges portals :
http://www.thinkdigit.com/forum/showthread.php?t=74849

Haven't tried most of them, as Project Eulera and CodeChef keep me busy enough.
