how to learn java

is it possible to learn java by self study if basic of c++ are known for non cs/it student
if yes suggest book (preferably indian writer)
tell time required
any certifications available ? are they helpful for career?

Its a good language to learn and has wide applications.
I would suggest to look for tutorials of java online,if you want theory,Book-Complete Reference by herbert schildt.
Rest of the things depends on your dedication.

head first java ( O'Reilly publication ) is good book ..
but its not of Indian writer
