Tips to clear IIIT Hyderabad M.Tech(CSE) entrance
« on: July 09, 2013, 01:45:39 pm »

About IIIT Hyderabad:

The International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIIT-H) is an autonomous university founded in 1998. It was set up as a not-for-profit public private partnership (N-PPP) and is the first IIIT to be set up (under this model) in India. The Government of Andhra Pradesh lent support to the institute by grant of land and buildings. A Governing Council consisting of eminent people from academia, industry and government presides over the governance of the institution.

IIIT-H was set up as a research university focused on the core areas of Information Technology, such as Computer Science, Electronics and Communications, and their applications in other domains. The institute evolved strong research programmes in a host of areas, with computation or IT providing the connecting thread, and with an emphasis on the development of technology and applications, which can be transferred for use to industry and society. This required carrying out basic research that can be used to solve real life problems. As a result, a synergistic relationship has come to exist at the Institute between basic and applied research. Faculty carries out a number of academic industrial projects, and a few companies have been incubated based on the research done at the Institute.

About the Entrance Exam:

The entrance exam has two parts:
1. Written
2. Interview

Written:
The written exam for CSE consists of two papers of 1.5 hours each. The first paper is pure aptitude, reasoning and english and its not very difficult to clear. I didn't prepare for it and yet i was able to clear it. It contains 50 questions. Time is of main concern. As there's no negative marking attempt as much as you can.
The 2nd paper is technical and contains 25 questions. The syllabus for PGEE is less than that of GATE. The subjects that are asked:
(a) Data Structures(Pointers Mainly)
(b) Algorithms
(c) Discrete Mathematics
(d) DCS
(e) Computer Organisation

Actual Syllabus from their site:
Fundamental Programming Concepts, Control Flow, Functions, Recursion, Basic Data Structures (arrays, lists, stacks, and queues), Basic algorithms (sorting and searching), Boolean Algebra, Digital Building Blocks (AND/OR/NAND/XOR Gates), Karnaugh's Maps, Computer Organisation, Number Systems. Capability to write programs in C or C++ is expected.

But i didn't master all the subjects. I just went with strong background in Data Structures and Algorithms and 10 out of 25 questions were asked from these subjects and i answered all of them correctly. My advice would be to master pointer concepts and sorting part along with stacks and queues and you will be able to answer these questions correctly. And i don't think that i have answered other subject's questions correctly, so the catch was those who were able to do those 10 questions correctly would have made it to the interview round(as other 15 questions were really hard).

I think 5000-6000 students had given the written, out of which 500-600 odd were selected for interview.

Interview Round:
The interview round took place in IIIT Hyderabad itself and i went through train , it took 30 hours to reach Hyderabad from Delhi, tiring journey.
The interview round was spanned for 4 days and i was called on the 1st day itself( though the call was made according to roll numbers).  It all started with a speech of dean stating that IIIT H is one of the best institutes in India for Computer Science Engineering and at par with IITs and literally it has the best faculty i have ever seen, will provide you the link for faculty.
I was the 6th guy to be interviewed and had to wait for 1.5 hours. Finally i was called for the interview, there were 4 people sitting there to take my interview, 3 of them were youngsters in the age group of 25-35 and one of them would be around 45 i think. Later i found out that one of them who majorly interviewed me was from John Hopkins.
So the interview started with an unusual question of
->"Why M.Tech and not MS?"
actually i only applied for M.Tech and not MS there, so i was puzzled but then i didn't bog down and  answered that right now i don't know my research areas, so firstly i want to master a particular field and later will do PhD in that.
After that they saw my marksheets of 10th,12th and B.Tech.  and was impressed with the performance, one of them exclaimed "ohh You are from Kendriya Vidyalaya!!!"
-> Then they asked my favourite subject and i said "Computer Networks", so they asked me if i am comfortable with Router's questions and i replied in affirmative, so they asked me about the routing protocols and their differences to which i answered correctly.
-> Then one of the interviewer asked me if i am comfortable in programming question to which i replied "yes", that was the turner, it started with a question of:
"Write a program to find out the maximum and minimum in an array"-> answered
and then they asked me :
"WAP to print the inorder traversal of a tree" -> answered(recursive solution)
then they asked me to use another data structure rather than writing the recursive solution, I said that would mean using stacks, to which they asked for the algo only, then i answered it.

Then they came to Final Year Project interview and asked about mine,
I told them that mine is from Embedded Systems and my role was that of an Embedded Programmer, unfortunately none of them were from Embedded Background , so they asked me to wait outside before they decide anything, so after waiting for 5 minutes , they called me back and asked me whether i am comfortable to give the Project interview to ECE faculty.... firstly i was like "OMG!!! ECE faculty!! What will happen now!!!" but then i thought i should grab this chance and instantly replied " No problem sir" and i was taken to ECE faculty for a 2nd interview.... and wohooo there were again 4 people sitting in the room to interview me, i introduced them to my project( my project has Stepper motor as its component), they asked me about the working of Stepper Motor, one of them literally gave me chaowk and asked me draw all the circuit diagrams of stepper motor, luckily i knew everything about the motor, so i explained everything, to my surprise 3 out of 4 were impressed,
My project included LASER, so one of them asked me about LASERs working(that guy had done his masters on LASER tech from IIT kanpur), i would be doomed if i answered anything wrong, that was a sheer luck that i remembered those 1st year lectures of Physics and knew the basics of LASER tech and told them about the population inversion....
then there was a bummer from that IIT K guy....
->"Tell me about Lenz Law"
i said but sir it has nothing to do with my project to which he replied "answer me", i thought this guy is from IIT K dude, he's far intelligent than me.... i said "Sorry sir i don't know about it"..... to which he rudely said "Since you are from CSE, go and become Bill Gates, you have nothing to do with Electronics", but to my surprise other 3 people were kind of impressed and i told them about the university prizes we won for that project and then i was asked to go to CSE faculty again....
i went back and they wished me luck....

later i roamed their campus and frankly speaking "MAZA AA GAYA YAAR"....

the results came 15 days later and shockingly "I was selected for M.Tech in CSE"
around 70-80 were finally selcted for M.Tech.

IIIT H doesnt disclose marks... so nobody knows the cutoff percentage....

and for paper 1, you don't need any extra preparation... but if you still want to prepare, then try R.S.Aggarwal.... it will suffice....

This is the interview experience of Lovlean Arora(writing on her behalf)

I cant write a blog.. but simple few points..
1.I dint know many questions, but i smiled n said i don't know..
2.Project mein bhi i had solid discussion n i guess dey were not satisfied.. ( so project is a point but not everything for doz who are so much worried bout it )
3.Give worst complexity soln algo first, coz their fav que is "ANYTHING MORE OPTIMIZED
4.Fav question of DS, involves changing DS among themselves, in same memory space etc.
5.OS Memory Management should be on tips. (Stack, heap, static mem diff, How to store very large data and all.. my intention is not to tell ques but know not only wat u directly read in book, but hidden questions too)
6.Their fav que, why MTech/MS?
7.Why PG after job?
8.What al other options you have (if gate score good, though rare)

PS: Al points might have been covered, still

First of all thx for sharing this experience :)

My query is supposedly after b tech cse from a college in IPU I can't get my dream job in the company I wish.

So what do u suggest? Should I prepare for GATE and aim to pursue m tech from iit nit iiit so I am open to higher paying jobs in top IT companies

OR accept the on campus placement from IPU college and work my way through experience and skills to reach my goal and top?

Thanks in advance

Well it depends upon your interests and dreams.... i had a dream to pursue technical education from a good institute and hence i prepared for GATE...
if your motive and dream matches mine... feel free to prepare for GATE... you will get good jobs in IT sector once you complete your post grad from these institutes....
but if your dream is just to earn big bucks then you can try your luck in CAT, GMAT as well....

it all depends upon your interest....
best wishes....

Thx see even though my interest is in CS and programming side I guess you will agree with me that IT engineers payscale is much less than they deserve and effort and work they produce .

So I guess I like your tip on preparation for CAT GMAT but just answer one more of my query please.

Is it possible we can do mba after mtech?

Thanks

you can do MBA after M.Tech, but take into account your future prospects while taking that decision.
IF YOU CAN DREAM IT,YOU CAN DO IT.
